Disposal company that runs on alternative fuel is chosen

Ware Disposal will collect the trash in Newport Coast through 2017, under a $6-million contract the Newport Beach City Council approved Tuesday. The company will use trucks that run on alternative fuel and have mechanical arms. Ware will recycle about 40% of what it collects and will provide extra recycling bins if residents request them.
City workers collect the trash in most of Newport Beach, but officials decided to continue contracting for waste pick-up in Newport Coast when the area was annexed to the city in 2002.
Council members did some haggling Tuesday with Ware Disposal and CR&R;, the company staff recommended for the contract, but ultimately went with Ware because its bid was lower. CR&R; was recommended because it met the requirement to use vehicles approved by the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Ware officials said they will have approved vehicles, but a mix-up in their proposal led the city to determine Ware didn’t meet the requirement.
