ARTS COMMISSION WRAPUP
The following is from the April 23 meeting of the Laguna Beach Arts Commission.
Three locations set at senior center
The commission approved a general concept for three art elements to be added to the community and senior center now under construction on Third Street.
Under the city’s Art in Public Places guidelines, $150,000 has been allocated from the project to be used in art elements on the property.
An Arts Commission committee reviewed the site plans, and found three locations to add art installations, which include a mural, artist-designed bench and sculpture.
The components would be designed and installed by an artist or artist team through a citywide art competition.
The committee will return with guidelines for the art competition to be discussed and approved at the next Arts Commission meeting.
Forest Lane mural to be removed
A temporary mural installed in 1999 on Forest Lane has been slated for removal due to weathering of the mural’s wooden substructure.
The mural was funded by Community Art Project with the support of the Beautification Council, and has been painted twice by Laguna College of Art & Design students, most recently in 2004.
