Kaluz named PoY

Corona del Mar High 6-foot-9 junior center Stefan Kaluz earned the CIF Southern Section Division III-A Player of the Year award in boys’ basketball and Coach Ryan Schachter received the Coach of the Year honor.

Kaluz was the go-to guy for the Sea Kings, who won the Pacific Coast League and the Southern Section Division III-A championships in Schachter’s first year at CdM (22-8, 7-1 in league).

Kaluz, a league Co-MVP, averaged 21 points, 12 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game, and shot 64% from the floor and led CdM to the opening round of the Division III State tournament.

Schachter, who’s in his third year of being a head coach after spending two years at Costa Mesa, guided the Sea Kings to their fifth section crown in school history.

Two of Kaluz’s teammates receiving All-CIF recognition were junior guard Joe Eberhard on the first team and senior guard Eddie Lane for second team.

Eberhard averaged 9.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game, all ranked second on the team. He shot 50% from three-point range, where he led the team with 34.

Lane was the Sea Kings’ third-leading scorer at nine points per game. He led the team with 2.1 steals, and also averaged 1.5 assists. This is the first year all four have been named All-CIF.

In Division IV-AA, Sage Hill School junior guard Jamie McGee made the second team. He led the Academy League with an 18.4 points per game average, the second time he’s been the league’s top scorer.

McGee, who also averaged 5.1 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 2.3 assists per game, helped the Lightning (14-13, 6-4 for third place in league) play host to their first CIF Southern Section home playoff game in school history.
