Festival ship docks at Ocean Institute

Artist Edward C. Sims’ H.M.S. Defiant, a handcrafted model of a British frigate of the early 1800’s, recently arrived at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point.

The Defiant has been a part of the Festival of Arts’ permanent art collection since 1983 and is now on long-term loan to the Institute.

Sims was a Festival of Arts exhibitor from 1957 to 1982, and was a prominent builder of model ships. His accurately rigged and painstakingly constructed scaled models, some as large as 6 feet long, can be found in several prestigious collections, such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the White House.

For more information on the Ocean Institute, call (949) 496-2274. To contact the Festival of Arts, call (949) 494-1145 or visit www.LagunaFestivalofArts.com.
