UC Irvine 9, New Mexico 2IRVINE — The No. 29-ranked Anteaters scored runs in each of the first five innings in a nonconference win Friday night at UCI.
Junior left fielder Taylor Holiday was three for four with three runs scored and two doubles for the ‘Eaters (17-5-1). Sophomore shortstop Ben Orloff and junior catcher Aaron Lowenstein each had two hits, and senior second baseman Cody Cipriano scored twice in UCI’s fifth straight win.
Anteaters starter Scott Gorgen allowed one run over five innings, improving to 4-1, and junior right fielder Bryan Petersen had an RBI triple.
The teams continue their three-game series tonight at 6 at UCI.

NCAA ChampionshipsMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The UC Irvine men’s 200-yard medley team placed 12th Friday night at the University of Minnesota.
The team, consisting of senior Eric Reilly, senior Dan Simonsen, junior Eddie Erazo and junior Randall Tom, finished the race in 1 minute, 27 seconds.
Tom finished ninth in the 100 butterfly in 46.71 seconds. Erazo was 15th in the 100 backstroke in 47.61, and his time of 47.27 seconds in the 100 back preliminaries was a UCI record. Simonsen finished 41st in the 100 breaststroke in 56 seconds flat.
TRACK AND FIELD
NORTHRIDGE — UC Irvine sophomore Lauren Collins won the heptathlon that concluded Friday at the Spring Break Open at Cal State Northridge.
Collins finished with 5,227 points, the fifth-best total in Anteaters history. Her marks Friday were 17 feet, 3 1/4 inches in the long jump, 111-10 in the javelin throw and 2 minutes, 20.47 seconds in the 800-meter run.
In the decathlon, UCI’s Eric Nyberg placed fifth with 6,349 points, and Shawn Maghzi was sixth with 6,282 points.
Nyberg’s marks Friday were 16.68 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, 105-0 in the discus throw, 14-1 1/4 in the pole vault, 177-0 in the javelin throw and 4:59.03 in the 1,500 meters.
