NEWPORT EARNS SUCCESS
The Newport Harbor High sailing team placed first and second at the Cardinal Regatta, held Feb. 24 and 25 out of the Stanford University Sailing Center in Redwood City.
In the Gold Division, the Newport Harbor varsity team consisting of Cole Hatton with senior crew Blair Belling, and Chris Barnard with crew Caitlin Beavers, dominated the event to win by 126 points. The Sailors team placing second in the regatta included Michael Menninger, Chris Segerblom, Wade Hatton, Brooke Thomson and Kayla McComb.
Corona del Mar High placed fourth in the Gold Division with a total of 267 points, led by skippers Andrew Mason and Reid Vitarelli, and crews Heather May and Alex Dunlap.
Sage Hill School’s varsity team placed sixth with 280 points.
The Newport Harbor High JV team of Dane Butera and crew Lindsay Beavers, and Randall Hause with crew Alexis Scott, won the Silver Division.
Over 40 high schools from Northern and Southern California participated in the event, one of the five Pacific Coast high school sailing regattas leading up to the national championships in May. Each boat sailed 12 races during the two-day event.
