UC Irvine 5, Portland 0IRVINE — Matt Morris went three for four with two RBIs and a run scored, and the Anteaters held the Pilots to seven hits in a nonconference game Tuesday.

The Anteaters (16-5-1), who had their third shutout, also had a season-high nine stolen bases, led by Jeff Cusick (two).

Freshman Cory Hamilton (1-1), Gary Nakashima, Christian Bergman and Chris Lopez combined for the shutout.

Ollie Linton went two for four for UCI, which begins a three-game home series with New Mexico Friday at 6 p.m.

Vanguard 10,COSTA MESA — Cleanup hitter Matt Voorhies picked up three hits including two doubles and a triple, while driving in two runs and scoring three in the Lions’ nonconference win Tuesday.

Voorhies was three for four and had a pair of stolen bases. Tyson Leighton scored twice and blasted a solo home run and Jason Machado added a three-run shot for Vanguard (10-6).

Irvine Valley 5, Orange Coast 4IRVINE — The Pirates overcame a 4-1 deficit, but lost after Abel Medina’s one-out, RBI-single with the bases loaded in an Orange Empire Conference game Tuesday.

Cory Olson went two for five with two RBIs and a run, Nick Rotkowitz was three for five and Eric Oliver two for four with a run. Pinch hitter Delancy Baker led off the eighth with a triple and scored on Olson’s RBI single. Later in the inning, Mike Ferraro tied the game bringing home Olson on an RBI single. Irvine Valley improved to 10-12, 2-4 in conference.

Orange Coast (12-10, 3-3) will play host to Cypress on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. At 2:15 p.m., OCC will have a dedication ceremony for Wendell Pickens Field and the opening of the fitness center.

Sarah Howe went two for two with two RBIs and one run to help lead Vanguard (24-5) to the win over Mt. Marty of Yankton, S.D. that went six innings. Colorado School of Mines had a two-run home run and a solo blast in the fourth to beat the Lions.

Vanguard, which went 7-1 at the Tucson Invitational Games, returns to action Saturday at noon, when it faces Azusa Pacific in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader.

UC Irvine 4, Yale 3IRVINE — Victor Lamm, Shimpei Suzuki, Mustafa Ulukan and Zac Tsai won in singles to lead the Anteaters to the win Tuesday.

Tsai clinched the team win with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Matt Schimmel in the No. 5 singles match.

Broadfoot and Kaloi, as well as Jayme Hu and Lisa Shih won in doubles to earn UCI (15-2) the point.

MEN’S GOLF

Fresno State ClassicFRESNO — Anteaters senior Brian Edick shot five-under-par 67 in the final round Tuesday to win medalist honors with a seven-under 209 for the 43rd annual tournament at Sunnyside Country Club.

Edick began the day in fourth place, but after finishing with the low round of the day he moved ahead of three, one of which was UC Irvine senior Jay Choe, who finished in second after shooting a two-under 70.

UC Irvine’s team score of seven-under was one stroke shy of catching champion San Diego State, which had a five-stroke leading heading into the final 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament.

John Chin (one-under 215) finished in seventh, Sean Shahi (218) was 13th and Tim Cha (222) was 33rd for the Anteaters.
