BASKETBALLThe Newport-Mesa chapter of NJB recently announced its seventh- and eighth-grade all-stars, who will begin all-star competition in the Orange County Tournament beginning on March 18. Teams are as follows:

AYSO Region 120The AYSO Region 120 girls’ under 14 all-stars team, the Costa Mesa Unknowns, advanced to the championship game of the Cactus Classic Soccer Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., March 3-4. The Unknowns fought hard before falling to a team from Corona, 3-1.

Unknowns advance to title game:

After losing their first game of the tournament, the Unknowns won their next games and earned enough points to make it to the championship game. The team looks forward to starting the spring season next week.

BASEBALLSam Cubeiro pitched lights out for Wachovia on March 5, striking out 10 batters in four innings. Billy MacDonald had an RBI triple, while Bryce Ashton, Ryan Banning and Cubeiro all doubled. Wachovia’s hitting was rounded out with base hits by Cort Hastings, Ryan Look and Andrew Machowski.

Wachovia (CdM) 7, Costa Mesa Twins 6:

The CdM team led the entire game, but their 7-3 lead was threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Costa Mesa rallied back to within one.

Newport Beach Little LeagueThe Cardinals opened their season March 5 with the win over the Pirates. The Cardinals’ Ryan Kleinman had a first-inning home run, Jake Hastings, Teddy Somekh and Patrick Standel also had hits, and Clint Henderson drew two walks that ended in runs for the Cards. On the mound, Ryan Maister struck out three batters in his two shutout innings.

AAA Division

Cardinals 9, Pirates 4:

For the Pirates, Tyler Gaede had a hit and Charlie Beall struck out the side in his one inning of work.
