A big first inning put the Huntington Beach High baseball team in motion toward a promising start to the 2007 prep baseball season.
The Oilers put up five runs in their first at-bat of the year and went on to pound visiting ML King of Riverside, 15-2 Friday in the opening-round of the Newport Elks Tournament.
Huntington did most of its scoring damage in the first three innings where the Oilers scored 14 of their 15 runs. Kyle Ammons recorded a pair of big home runs, a three-run shot to account for all three of the runs scored by the Oilers in the second innings followed by a two-run homer in a six-run third inning.
Of Huntington’s 10 hits, Lane Stone tripled and John Miranda doubled.
Andy Ragsdale got the win.
On Monday, the Oilers suffered their first loss of the season when they fell at Mission Viejo, 4-2, in tournament pool play. Again, they got off to a hot start and again it was Ammons who provided the spark with a two-run home run in the top of the first. The Diablos, however, took the lead for good on a three-run home run by Chris Barnes in the bottom-half of the inning.
Also at the Newport Elks Tournament, Ocean View dropped its season opener to host Pacifica, 3-1. Sean Burleson hit a solo home run in the third inning to account for the Seahawks’ only run.
At the Loara Tournament, Marina scored a 4-2 victory Saturday over visiting La Mirada; Kevin Bodine hit a solo homer in the bottom of the first to give the Vikings the early lead. Mark Trentacosta got the win and Paul Strong the save.
Also at the Loara Tournament, Edison began its season with an 11-2 loss at Canyon on Friday, then was shut out Saturday by visiting Kennedy, 4-0. Hunter White had a pair of doubles in the loss to Kennedy.
In softball
Huntington Beach split its first two games of the Downey Tournament Saturday. The Oilers dropped their opener to host Downey, 9-2, but came back to blank Artesia, 7-0.
In the win over Artesia, the Oilers scored four runs in the top of the first inning, then completed the scoring with a three-run second inning. Meghan White had two hits to pace an eight-hit Huntington attack that saw Jenni Driver, Allie Dufault, Amanda Horowitz, Chelsey Pinegar, Kara Rutkin and Cory Schlinglog all single.
White, Dufault, Horowitz and Schlinglog each had an RBI. Horowitz and Schlinglog shared the mound with Schlinglog getting the win.
In the loss to Downey, Rutkin hit a two-run home run and White and Dufault singled.
Marina opened its season Friday with a 1-0 win over visiting Rosary. Michelle Fuzzard and Christina Hart had doubles for the Vikings. Taysia Kaufman, in relief of Fuzzard, notched the win. The two limited Rosary to three hits.
On Saturday, the Vikings split their first two games at the Cypress Tournament, blanking Troy, 5-0, before losing 5-4 to Tesoro.
In lacrosse
Huntington dropped a 17-4 home match to St. Margaret’s. Ryan Tully led the Oilers on offense with three goals and also had nine ground balls. Derek Rosas scored the other goal. Chase Duquette led the Oilers defense with six ground balls.
