THAT’S DEBATABLE:Veterans hospitals

Reports about poor living conditions and care at an outpatient facility for Walter Reed Army Medical Center led Army Secretary Francis J. Harvey to replace the hospital’s commander and then forced Harvey to resign. As Congress holds hearings on the scandal, some top lawmakers are calling for a review of all veterans hospitals. Are you confident that local veterans are getting the care they need, or would you like a thorough review of California’s veterans hospitals?

The recent information that has come to light about the care at Walter Reed Army Hospital is extremely disturbing. Our troops deserve the best possible standards when they return home in need of medical care. From the information uncovered in recent days it is clear there are serious management problems at these medical facilities.

Yes, I support a review of the local veterans’ medical facilities. The problems that occurred at Walter Reed were due to poor management. It is not unlikely that similar management problems may exist at other facilities across the country or in Southern California.

At this point it appears that the shortcomings in the system have been found to be on the part of the veterans hospitals and not the military hospitals, so we should be focusing on correcting that problem. Whether or not we should be doing other things for veterans is another issue, which I would be sympathetic to.
