Vanguard 15, Westmont 8

COSTA MESA — The Lions took a 9-0 lead after three innings and hung on for a Golden State Athletic Conference win Wednesday at Vanguard.

Luke Iverson was three for five with two doubles and two RBIs for Vanguard (6-6, 6-6 in conference).

Nick Vaughn, Zach Leighton (three RBIs), Keegan Freeman and Adam Hastings all added two hits for the Lions, with Hastings hitting a home run.

Richard Jessup pitched eight innings to get the win for Vanguard, improving to 2-0 on the season.

The Lions are at Westmont today at 2:30 p.m.

COSTA MESA — Pitchers Melissa Forrester and Kelsey Boyer each won for the Lions in a nonconference sweep at Vanguard on Wednesday.

Vanguard shortstop Rachel Bomgren was three for four with two runs in the first game, and Sarah Howe and Jennifer Rynda both had doubles and two hits for the Lions (17-4).

In Game 2, Boyer improved to 4-0 in a five-inning win, scattering five hits. Bomgren was again three for four, with three RBIs, and first baseman April Glenn also had three RBIs. Left fielder Katie Daniels was three for three with two runs and two RBIs, and Rynda scored three runs for Vanguard, which scored five times in the second and fourth innings.

Vanguard is at the Tucson Invitational tournament starting Friday.

SAN MARCOS — Matt Knutson recorded a career-high 19 kills and added seven digs as the Pirates on Wednesday won the Pacific Coast Conference match, 30-27, 30-26, 24-30, 30-22, and their seventh match in a row.

Rick Schroeder finished with 13 kills and seven blocks, and Alika De Rego had 10 digs for Orange Coast (7-1, 2-0 in conference).

Vanguard 9, Cal Baptist 0

RIVERSIDE — The NAIA No. 5-ranked Lions swept all nine matches played in an easy Golden State Athletic Conference win Wednesday at Cal Baptist.

Dominic Stockler and Florian Lemke held on for a 9-8 win at No. 1 doubles, and also both won their singles matches.

Dieter Weislmaier, Greg Chevalier, Vasileios Psyrras and Garrett Gillion also won singles matches for Vanguard (7-2).

IRVINE — Victor Lamm defeated Rice’s Filip Paroci 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in No. 2 singles action, giving the Anteaters their only point in the nonconference home match on Tuesday.

UC Irvine (4-7) plays host to Georgia State today at 1:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

RIVERSIDE — After having action suspended due to rain after three singles matches were completed on Feb. 27, the fifth-ranked Lions resumed play Wednesday.

Vanguard, which improved to 7-1, took all six singles matches, and two of three doubles matches.
