Sea Kings, Mustangs hit road

The Corona del Mar High boys’ and Costa Mesa High girls’ basketball teams will continue their seasons in the Southern California regional quarterfinals of the CIF State Championships, beginning Thursday.

The Sea Kings (22-7), who claimed the program’s fifth CIF Southern Section title by defeating Renaissance Academy of La Cañada in the III-A title game at Honda Center, will open on the road against San Diego Section champion Mission Bay (22-5), in the Division III regionals at 7 p.m.

Costa Mesa (20-11), which fell to St. Mary’s Academy of Inglewood, 64-37, in the Southern Section Division IV-AA title game Friday at the Walter Pyramid, will open on the road Thursday in Division III action against Yosemite (22-7). Tipoff is 7 p.m.

Mission Bay, the No. 3 seed, defeated St. Augustine, 78-65, to win the San Diego Section Division III title Saturday at the University of San Diego.

The Buccaneers are led by 6-foot-5 James Hancock, who had 21 points and 16 rebounds Saturday, as well as 6-2 junior Avery Petty (24 points and nine rebounds in the title game).

CdM, the No. 6 seed, is led by 6-9 junior Stefan Kaluz, who had 23 points and seven rebounds in the final.

Yosemite, the No. 3 seed, won its fourth straight Central Section title Saturday, topping Hanford, 62-50, in the Division III final at Selland Arena in Fresno.

Katie Menton had 22 points and eight boards for the Badgers.

Costa Mesa, led by 5-7 senior center Jennifer Courtney and junior point guard Michelle Figueroa, is the No. 6 seed.

Regional semifinals are scheduled Saturday, with regional finals set for March 17 at Pauley Pavilion.

The state championship games, pitting regional winners from Northern and Southern California against one another, are March 24 at ARCO Arena in Sacramento.

Artesia (29-2) is the No. 1 seed in boys’ SoCal Division III, while Mt. Miguel (27-4) a San Diego Section champion, is the top seed in girls’ Division III for Southern Caifornia.
