FAIR GAME:Four ‘great’ minds think alike

You talk about happy, I was overjoyed with Tuesday night’s vote by the Newport Beach City Council to keep the plans for a park above the Newport Beach library.
Who does this Bill Ficker think he is?
A centrally located city hall? What a dumb idea!
“Once a park, always a park.”
“You can’t go back on a commitment.”
Even though there’s still lots to be done, I have to be honest: My family and I are already making plans to use the new park.
“Honey, get out the Frisbee, grab the baseball equipment and leash up the dogs! Don’t forget a tennis ball. Oh, wait a minute. It’s a passive park, darn.”
“Honey, leave the kids at home, forget the dogs and get out a couple of good books! Why don’t you bring some pillows — maybe we’ll just take a nap. Don’t forget the sun block.”
I can’t think of anything more exciting than parking down by the library and hiking up the hill some six stories of elevation to get there. I hope they have a couple of rest stops and a place to sit down on the way up. And don’t forget to bring water.
As far as I’m concerned, forget the views of the bluffs and vistas I’m hearing so much about. And who hasn’t seen Catalina Island from afar?
What I’m really looking forward to is spending a day in the park looking down at the passing cars as they ramble up and down MacArthur Boulevard. Can you imagine anything better? Maybe it’ll become a Newport Beach pastime.
“Honey look, it’s a ’94 Buick Skylark. Wow, there goes a Chevy Monza. Gosh, I haven’t seen one of those in a while. Was that a Ford Taurus?”
It’ll be perfect.
Or what about that view looking over the top of the library?
“Well, by gosh, that there is a two-ton air conditioning unit, son. You don’t see those every day.”
“Grandpa, what’s that vent for?”
It’ll be perfect.
And can’t you just imagine the people in the Newport Center office buildings flooding that area for lunchtime visits? Fourteen minutes over, 14 minutes back. But that still leaves two minutes for lunch. But don’t forget the bluffs and vistas.
I’m excited. It’ll be perfect.
The completion of the park will certainly go down as a memorable date in the history of Newport Beach.
Well, not to all of Newport Beach, but certainly for those who live on the hill across the street.
They did it! You have to give them credit for that.
Their idea of a passive park is a park nobody uses. Well, they certainly picked the right spot!
Remember those car enthusiasts who use to flood the Crystal Cove Promenade on the weekends before they were asked to leave by the Irvine Co.? Maybe they could — oh, never mind. It’s a passive park.
Anyway, thanks to the four of you for keeping your commitment. You know who you are. Well, not really your commitment, but someone’s commitment.
I’m excited. It’ll be perfect!
