Costa Mesa’s championship run ends

LONG BEACH — Costa Mesa High’s bid to win its third CIF title in girls basketball ended with a 64-37 loss to St. Mary’s Academy Friday at the Walter Pyramid.
Michelle Figueroa led the No. 3-seeded Mustangs (20-11) with 13 points in the CIF Southern Section Division IV-AA championship game. St. Mary’s (29-5) of Inglewood, the top seed, snapped Costa Mesa’s 12-game winning streak.
Jennifer Courtney added nine points and 10 rebounds, while Nikki Brannon had six points and six rebounds for the Mustangs, the Orange Coast League champions.
Costa Mesa has qualified for the CIF Division III state playoffs and will find out its seed in the Southern California regional Sunday.
