HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:Estancia’s defense leads to upset over Breakers

COSTA MESA — The Estancia High girls’ soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak in the Orange Coast League by knocking off first-place Laguna Beach, 2-0, Thursday at Estancia.

Missing three starters, the Eagles (1-3-1 in league) posted the shutout over the Breakers behind seven saves from senior Madison Urtusuastegui and an all-around defensive effort Eagles Coach Steve Crenshaw said.

Junior forward Jennifer Thomas scored the first goal and freshman forward Jillian Beck scored the second. Junior midfielder Stacy McDaniels recorded both assists.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 2, Beckman 0CORONA DEL MAR — With eight players out with illnesses, senior Kaleigh Trider scored two goals to lift the Sea Kings on Thursday to their first Pacific Coast League victory.

Trider scored in the fourth minute off an assist from Lexi Hensen. The second goal came in the 63rd from Cosie Andujai.

Goalkeeper Corey Cano made seven saves for CdM (4-8-5, 1-3-1 in league), which plays host to Laguna Hills Tuesday at 3 p.m.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Costa Mesa 7, Tustin 0TUSTIN — Talhia Nuñez scored three goals and added two assists to lead the Mustangs to the nonleague win at Tustin Thursday.

Brittany Mucha recorded her first shutout of the season, finishing with seven saves for Costa Mesa (12-10), which plays at Los Osos in the Bonita-Whittier Tournament Monday at 5 p.m.

Mesa’s Ashley Rendon finished with two goals and one assist. She also drew two ejections.

Marina 53, Newport Harbor 21NEWPORT BEACH — Four Sailors recorded victories in Thursday’s Sunset League dual meet loss, starting with Eddie Garcia (112 pounds), followed by Bruce Hartshorn (189), Cameron Rausch (215) and Brian Beaudette (heavyweight).

Garcia beat Marina’s Robert Abella, 3-2, and Hartshorn pinned Marina’s Sean De’Heras at 1:02. Rausch and Beaudette won their matches by forfeit.

Newport Harbor (8-9, 0-4 in league) plays host to Fountain Valley Wednesday at 4 p.m. It will be the last regular-season league dual meet.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Edison 70, Newport Harbor 24HUNTINGTON BEACH — Senior guard Amber Munnelly scored 11 points but the Sailors dropped the Sunset League contest Thursday.

Newport Harbor fell to 4-14, 0-6 in league.
