WET AND WILD WITH ROCKIN’ FIG:Longboard Crew cruises to win

The Huntington Beach Longboard Crew had a pretty decent showing in the Doheny Longboard Assn.-sponsored event earlier this month.

There were some fun 2- to-4-foot lined-up workable rights at Church’s Point for the 17 clubs that showed up.

The H.B.L.B. Crew won the tandem event, with Wendy Lynn and Caleb Wilborn doing some beautiful holds and moves and getting some great rides for the win.

In the legends competition for ages 60-69, new member Wayne Hunter ripped apart those rights, winning all his heats and the final, too.

In the 14-and-under gals’ competition, Kirra Kehoe made two finals, winning one with some hot rides as well.

And a few other locals made the finals. Bill Brewer took third with some nice nose rides, Gary Sahagen — the founder and director of the H.B.L.B. Crew — placed fifth, while pro shredder Kelly Kraushaar finished sixth in his tough division.

Some of the other members who advanced out of their first-round heats included Rob Brown, Mike Stone, Greg Cantly, Mike LaLanger, Brian Boyes and Marilyn McCart.

On Feb. 4, the same day as the Super Bowl and the Pacific Shoreline Marathon, the H.B.L.B. Crew will have its annual “Pier Paddle” race. It starts at 9 a.m. for all ages, and the top six finishers will receive medals. Longboards only — no paddle boards on the Huntington Pier’s south side in the chilly-willy, mid-50-degree water!

On Feb. 7, there will be an executive board meeting at the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum, and on Feb. 14 the monthly club meeting will be at Mario’s Restaurant in the Five Points Shopping Center, 18603 Main St.

That’s usually held on the second Wednesday of the month, and that meeting starts at 7:15 p.m. in the banquet room, where regular members show up and new members can join up, too.

One last thing: The H.B.L.B. Crew Valentine Dance will be at the new Sam’s Seafood at a date yet to be announced. It’s been known to be a fundraiser over the years.

The Edison High School Surf Team will be out in full force this weekend. The A team is scheduled to surf in the event this Saturday at Ninth Street.

Co-team captains Rob McCarty and the “air-bustin” Keetin Devine are psyched up to do some big damage, along with other rippers Ryan Macfee, Brett Myers and Chad Masri, who’s been tearing up the pier lately.

Coach Zoarn Forg wants the kids to get as much contest experience as possible as they gear up for the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. Nationals in June.

Some of the team will be doing double-duty surfing the Volcom Starfish surf event at R.J.’s River Jetties at the south end of Huntington on the same day.

I thought I heard there’s a swell on the way. That would be nice, because it’s been pretty flat lately, and brrr, cold, too.
