Immigration sweeps bring in 750

Federal immigration agents arrested more than 750 people around Southern California, including 111 people in Orange County, in a week-long operation that ended Tuesday.

It’s not clear whether any arrests took place in Costa Mesa, where a federal agent works from the city jail to check the immigration status of people booked there. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials didn’t have information for specific cities, and Costa Mesa police said they weren’t aware of any federal enforcement activity in their city.

In Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties, immigration officers found 338 people who have violated immigration laws, including some illegal immigrants who have not followed judges’ deportation orders, according to information from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Also charged with immigration violations were 423 people who were being held in the five counties’ jails but had not been identified as deportable foreign nationals. The enforcement effort is part of Operation Return to Sender, which has led to more than 13,000 arrests nationwide since it began in June 2006.
