City to address permit parking

Newport Beach residents complained last fall about noisy, inconsiderate beachgoers and parking problems, so the City Council on Tuesday will discuss permit parking for Peninsula Point and Ocean Boulevard in Corona del Mar at a study session.

Council members haven’t decided whether to pursue permit parking. They want to get more information on what it would entail and hear from residents. Some of the problems are long-standing, Newport Beach City Manager Homer Bludau said, but they were heightened last year by a hot summer and bigger beach crowds.

He’ll present information about a decal parking program for residents, how much that might cost and how it could be enforced. If the council decides to move forward with permit parking by the beach, the program would need approval from the California Coastal Commission, so Bludau likely would seek advice from other cities that have tried such programs.

The study session will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers, Newport Beach City Hall, 3300 Newport Blvd.
