UC Irvine def. California BaptistRIVERSIDE — The Anteaters, the top-ranked team in the nation, opened up their season with a 30-24, 30-23, 27-30, 30-25 victory over host California Baptist Wednesday.

Jayson Jablonsky, last year’s National Player of the Year, recorded a team-high 17 kills and 11 digs for UC Irvine (1-0).

Brian Thornton dished out 60 assists and had 11 digs, Matt Webber had 15 kills, Cole Reinholm had 12, David Smith had 10 kills and eight blocks and Aaron Harrel had 10 kills. Brent Asuka, who was National Newcomer of the Year last season, had 16 digs.

Webber and Harrel each had three aces. UCI plays at UC Santa Barbara Tournament Friday and Saturday.
