Vikings set new state 3-point record

It’s was lights out for the Marina High boys’ basketball team on Dec. 13.

The Vikings broke a 12-year-old state record for most three-point baskets in a game by blistering the nets for 28 in a 117-97 victory over Barstow in their opening game of the Hesperia Tournament.

The old record for three-point baskets in a game was 24, Vikings Coach Roger Holmes said.

The previous record was set in 1994 by Santa Maria Valley Christian.

Junior forward Troy Lewis led the barrage from behind the arc with 12 three-pointers. Mike Kinoshita hit for nine others, Brendan Holmes had three and Dion Douglas, Jimmy Irvin, Garrett James and David Vo all had one.

Lewis’ 12 three-pointers set a new school record and the nine by Kinoshita tied the previous mark set in 2001 by James Lambert.

“We had a very good tournament up in Hesperia, losing only to a very, very talented Knight team,” said Holmes, whose team is averaging 90 points per game.

The Vikings went 3-1 in the tournament, their lone loss coming to Knight of Palmdale in a semifinal matchup.

In the third-place game, Marina raced past San Bernardino, 97-65. Four Vikings hit double-figures, led by Lewis’ 24 points. James and Kinoshita each scored 18 and Douglas 10. Lewis also led the team in three-point baskets with five.

In the semifinals, Marina fell, 97-74, to Knight of Palmdale. Lewis again was on fire from the arc, hitting nine three-point baskets en route to a game-high 33 points. Kinoshita hit four three-pointers to finish with 19 points. Douglas had 10 assists.

Marina also beat Apple Valley, 97-80. A balanced offense saw James score 16 points, Kinoshita 15, Lewis 14, Douglas and Holmes 11 each and Chad Lewis had 10 to go along with 11 rebounds. Douglas also recorded eight assists.

Roger Holmes said that the Vikings, who don’t have a lot of team size, are using a game plan first installed by men’s basketball coach David Arseneault at Grinnell College in Iowa in the early 1990s.

“It’s called ‘The System,’ where it’s based on a lot of possessions, three-point shooting and full-court pressure to create turnovers,” he said. “Basically, it’s controlled chaos.”

To further confuse opponents, Holmes said he shuffles in five fresh players every minute of play in each game.

Heading into this week’s action, Holmes said that Marina is averaging 16.83 three-point baskets per game — tops in the nation. As a team, the Vikings have 134 in eight games. They’re well on pace to break the state single-season record which is 309.

“So far, it’s been pretty successful,” Holmes said of The System. “It’s a lot of fun to watch.”
