Unconscious man in critical condition

An apparent transient remained in critical condition at UC Irvine Medical Center on Friday after he was found unconscious with extensive injuries to his face and ribs in the 900 block of Arlington Drive on Monday, police said.

Costa Mesa police do not know what happened to Charles Patrick Martin, 59, but Sgt. Marty Carver said he may have suffered the injuries between midnight and 4 a.m., when he was found. Although police are unsure, the injuries seem to indicate Martin was beat up, Carver said. Martin is still unconscious at the hospital, Carver said.

A resident found Martin unconscious in the area across from the Davis Education Center, Carver said.

Martin is described as a white man with brown hair, 5-feet, 10-inches tall, weighing about 175 pounds, according to police.

When he was found, Martin was wearing a white shirt with an American flag in a design of the United States on it, and jeans. Police think he may have had a dark gray jacket and a small bag with him when he was injured.

“We don’t know what the motive was,” Carver said. “We don’t know if he was robbed or what because we didn’t know what he had on him at the time.”

Police are asking that anyone who knows Charles Patrick Martin or anyone who may have seen what happened to him call Det. Mike Delgadillo at (714) 754-5197 or the detective bureau at (714) 754-5205.
