COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER:Lions net five after half

COSTA MESA — Dane Gallion scored two goals for the Vanguard University men’s soccer team, which broke away from a scoreless first half for a 5-0 win over Fresno Pacific in a quarterfinal of the NAIA Region II Tournament Wednesday.
It is the second time the Lions have reached the semifinals in the school’s history. They will play at second-seeded Concordia Saturday at 1 p.m.
Vanguard (14-2-2), the No. 3 seed which is vying to win its first Region II title and make its first trip to the NAIA National Tournament, outshot the sixth-seeded Sunbirds 18-6, including an 11-4 advantage in the second half.
Sem Lopez gave Vanguard its first goal in the 47th minute when he scored with a one-touch kick over the goalkeeper into the top left corner. Christopher Leiva and Brian Vestal assisted.
Gallion gave the Lions a 2-0 lead in 69th minute and Leiva pushed it to 3-0 in the 73rd with his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Gallion collected his second goal three minutes later. Vestal capped the scoring, on a Leiva assist, with less than a minute remaining.
William Johnson recorded nine saves and his ninth shutout of the season for Vanguard.
Concordia handed the Lions their only Golden State Athletic Conference loss of the season. Vanguard finished second in the GSAC to Concordia, one point behind the Eagles.
