Raffle drawing to be held Wednesday

The Laguna Beach Soccer Club will hold a first-time raffle drawing on Wednesday. The grand prize is a DeBilzan artwork. Other prizes include an acrylic on canvas by artist Iris Bourne, diamond stud earrings, a two night’s stay for two at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas that includes dinner and a show, a sea grass chaise lounge, as well as several others.

The cost per raffle ticket is $5 and currently is on sale through Tuesday. Winners will be notified following the Wednesday drawing.

Money raised by the raffle will benefit the Laguna Beach community by supporting selected scholarship players who have the skills to play for the club, but do not have the funds to participate. Additional funds will also help with field costs, coaches and coaches’ attendance to specialized clinics, coaching with special equipment and other team-building activities. Laguna Beach Soccer Club is a non-profit organization.

Laguna soccer team fourth in tourney

A soccer team representing the Laguna Day Worker Center earned a fourth-place finish Sunday at the 2006 Day Laborer Soccer Cup.

The competition, played under the theme, “No Human Being Is Illegal,” drew 16 teams from the Southland and was sponsored by the National Day Laborer Organizing Network.

Laguna Beach defeated a team from La Jolla, 7-2, in the first round and then played Canoga Park to a 3-3 tie to advance to the playoffs.

Laguna went on to blank Redondo Beach, 3-0, in their first playoff match and played Pasadena to a 1-1 tie in the second playoff match but lost the game in a shootout, 5-4.
