Two arrests in shooting of woman

Costa Mesa police made arrests Wednesday and Thursday in connection with a July 15 gang-related shooting of a pregnant woman on Pamela Lane, though they did not reveal information about the arrests until Friday. The department’s gang unit arrested Jose Navarro, 18, of Costa Mesa on Wednesday and Daniel Arias, 19, of Santa Ana, on Thursday.

Arias was arrested on suspicion of shooting at an inhabited dwelling, street gang crime and assault with a deadly weapon.

Navarro was charged Friday with five felony counts in connection with the shooting, among them shooting at an occupied building, assault and street terrorism. Prosecutors enhanced the charges, alleging Navarro belongs to a street gang, used a firearm and caused great bodily injury to the victim.

The 25-year-old woman, whose name was withheld by police, was shot in the leg. She is not associated with gangs and was not the intended target, police said.

At the time of the shooting, police said the woman was in an apartment building standing by a window. She was shot after a white car pulled up, a man got out and shot at the building.

Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Paul Beckman said the intended target of the shooting was from another gang.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and one or more additional arrests are expected, he said.

Arias is being held in the Orange County Jail on $250,000 bail, but no court date has been set. Navarro is being held on $1 million bail.
