HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:Sea Kings, Tars score big wins

FULLERTON — The Corona del Mar High girls tennis team used strong play in doubles to post a 14-4 nonleague triumph Thursday at Troy, which captured the last two CIF Southern Section Division II titles.

The Warriors (2-1) moved up to Division I this year.

CdM sophomore Lindsay Zotovich remained undefeated, 11-0, with different doubles partners this season. For the first time this season, she teamed up with Danielle Kaiden, her partner from last year, Coach Brian Ricker said.

Ricker also said the victory was big for the Sea Kings (4-0).

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Newport Harbor def. Northwood

IRVINE — Junior Emily Gelbaum earned a 6-0 singles win and Kristina Heimstaedt won four games as a singles substitute to help the Sailors post a 76-71 nonleague win on games Thursday after the two teams split 18 sets.

The Sailors’ No. 2 doubles team of Chrissy Schwartz and Natalie Small swept their three sets to help the Tars improve to 3-0.

COSTA MESA — No. 2 singles player Kendra Fisher and the No. 1 doubles team of Abby Koff and Jennifer Johnston did not drop a game as the Eagles remained undefeated, 4-0, with the nonleague win Thursday.

Sophomore No. 1 singles player Ellie Edles dropped just one game in her three sets.

The Eagles will try to stay perfect Tuesday when they play host to El Modena.

ALISO VIEJO — Rounds of six-over-par 42 by Courtney Wright and Katherine Hanson helped the Sea Kings remain undefeated Thursday in a nonleague match at Aliso Viejo Golf Club.

Kelly Moorhead, Jessica Milner and Quinn Kawata all shot 44 for the Sea Kings (3-0), who play at the San Clemente tournament today at 7 a.m.

Aliso’s Angela Lee (36) was the medalist.

Sage Hill 262

ANAHEIM — Lightning sophomore Kelsey Venditozzi was the medalist with an eight-over-par 43, in the nonleague loss at Dad Miller Golf Club.

Kimberly Venditozzi (49), Sara Anderson (53), Amy Babbush (58) and Christy Li (59) also scored for the Lightning (1-2).

Sage plays Mater Dei on Tuesday at Willowick Golf Course.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Pomona Tournament

POMONA — Estancia High topped Villa Park, 25-19, 25-20, 25-23, then beat Gabrielino, 25-23, 25-15, 19-25, 25-9, in pool-play matches on Thursday.

Annie Tomasek led the Eagles (2-1) with 11 kills against Villa Park and 12 kills against Gabrielino.

Laguna Hills def. Costa Mesa

LAGUNA HILLS — The Mustangs’ Renee Nutter served up 11 aces, but Laguna Hills won, 25-17, 25-13, 25-18, Thursday.

Nutter also had 12 assists.

Danielle Morton contributed eight kills and Caitlin Duffy finished with 11 digs for the Mustangs (0-2).

CROSS COUNTRY

Non-scoring meet

COSTA MESA — Estancia High sophomore Fernando Orozco finished first in 17 minutes, 44 seconds, just one second ahead of teammate Wes Barloon in the Eagles’ non-scoring meet with Bolsa Grande on Tuesday.

Sydney Barloon was the Eagles’ top girls runner, finishing third in 20:16.
