The big boys are on the west coast of Cally this week at the Boost Mobile Pro presented by Hurley at Lower Trestles, San Clemente.

The premiere southwest point break is host to the Assn. of Surfing Professionals, World Champ- ionship Tour event, which started Tuesday and is going till Saturday’s finals. The top 44 in the world have already scored some good two- to five-foot surf with another south swell forecasted for the end of the week.

Already in the first half of the week the surfing has been insane with Brazil’s Adriano De Souza lighting up the action right in the first heat of the event.

Australia’s Nathan Hedge, the “Hedge Hog,” took the win over hometown hero Timmy Reyes, who was tearing it up too, placing second.

Pulling the highest scores of the first couple days was “Parko” Joel Parkinson, surfing loose and fast and doing some incredible tail sliding turns. He received 18 out of a possible 20 points for two waves — wow, that’s nines or better.

Hawaiian Roy Powers, just off that final placing at the U.S. Open, won his heat. Santa Barbara’s Bobby Martinez was busting some straight-up backside moves and survived a close interference call to move on.

The winner at the last tour event at Jeffrey’s Bay, Mick Fanning, was having some trouble finding a good wave out there and went to the losers round for another shot at it.

East Coaster Damien Hobgood adjusted to the surf, no problem, tearing it up with some mean slashes.

Defending event winner and current A.S.P. points leader, seven-time world champ Kelly Slater threw a 360 air on one wave, landing it perfect and looks like he’s on a quest to win again. In the heat, Slates took out wild card Dane Reynolds, who some tab is the best free style surfer in the world, quite easily.

Three time world champ Andy Irons put on a hot performance, averaging over eights a wave in his 30-minute time span. Aussie rad man Taj Burrow blew up in his heat too, defeating wildcard and U.S. Open winner Rob Machado, who was ripping as well.

Aussies “the Dingo” regular footer Dean Morrison and veteran back-sider “Occy” Mark Occhilupo both won their heats and advanced to round three, which starts at 8 a.m. this morning at Lowers. There should be some big heats today! Definitely worth the walk. Stay tuned for results.

The Western Surfing Assn. held its first event of the season a few weeks back at Trails at San Onofre in some solid three- to six-foot surf.

Some Surf City residents did well with Paige Ortiz winning the super groms girls 12 and under division in short board and Chloe Murray second in the grom long boarding.

In boys short board, 13 and under, Derek Peters placed third, getting some good rides, while Tess Lustbaum was fourth in gals short board for the 17 and under crew.

H.B.’s Danny Misken ripped to third in mens, while Darcy De Lao was second in open mens and also won masters too.

In senior mens long board, it was a sweep, with big Pat Schlick winning, doing some fancy foot work and Bryan Stanley placing third and Troy Bertrand rounding out the top four for the homeys.

And in grand masters Schlick took the split decision over the Figster for the win and Jay Boldt came in third for a good jump on the ratings race.

Next up, this weekend is Ventura’s Seaside Park for the Donnie Soloman Memorial.

I was wrong — the H.B. City contest is this weekend at the H.B. pier. All the bro’s are in. See ya. Fig, over and out.
