Winning a habit for locals

It was a good day for Newport-Mesa high school girls’ tennis programs Tuesday, as Corona del Mar, Sage Hill, Newport Harbor and Estancia all posted decisive nonleague victories.

Reigning CIF Southern Section Division V champion Sage Hill defeated Orange Lutheran, 13-5.

Corona del Mar topped Mira Costa, 16-2, Newport Harbor handled Sunny Hills, 14-4, and Estancia dispatched Irvine, 15-3.

Coach A.G. Longoria’s Sage Hill squad improved to 3-0 this season and extended its winning streak to 10 matches, dating back to last season with its win at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

Senior Allie Hsu and junior Brina Dokich swept at No. 1 doubles to lead the Lightning.

Orange Lutheran fell to 1-2.

The CdM doubles tandem of senior twin sisters Hayley Young and Miranda Young continued to dominate for the Sea Kings, dropping only two games in three sets at Mira Costa.

CdM (2-0) dropped only one set in singles.

Both senior Jill Damion and freshman Melissa Matsuoka swept.

For Newport Harbor, junior Alex McIntosh swept at No. 1 singles and the doubles teams of Sasha Dunlap and Brittany Sowers, as well as Alee Shea and Avalon Sigalos, also swept to help the Sailors win their season opener.

The Sailors return to action today at Foothill at 3 p.m.

CdM plays host to Marlborough today at 3:15, while Sage Hill Sage Hill plays host to the four-team Lightning Invitational, Friday and Saturday at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

Estancia sophomore Ellie Edles completed three singles sets for the first time since sustaining a back injury last season and swept. The Eagles top singles player swept, as did Eagles’ freshman Kendra Fisher, playing at No. 3 singles.

Junior Abby Koff and sophomore Jennifer Johnston also swept at No. 1 doubles to help the Eagles improve to 3-0.
