COLLEGE ROUNDUP:UCI runners post fast start

HUNTINGTON BEACH — UC Irvine runners won the men’s and women’s races and the women’s cross country team was also victorious Saturday at the UC Irvine Invitational at Central Park.

Sophomore Laura Olvera completed the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 7.7 seconds to beat teammate and runner-up Sara Mickelson (17:31.1), a transfer from Loyola Marymount.

UCI senior Ricky Barnes, coming off a redshirt season, won the men’s five-mile race in 24:49.3 to help the Anteaters men’s team finish second behind UC Santa Barbara.

Junior Marie Nguyen (ninth in 18:40.4), junior Amber Gordon (17th in 18:52.8), junior Erinn Kim (21st in 19:01.5), sophomore Samantha Costantini (23rd in 19:07.6), and junior Elaine Gillespie (fifth in 19:12.5), helped the UCI women compile 40 points, four better than UCSB.

Finishing in the men’s top 24 for UCI were junior Tim Hearst (16th in 25:36.9), sophomore Nick Mosey (19th in 25:41.7), senior Tom Whelan (23rd in 25:36.9) and junior Sky Johnston (24th in 25:50.3).

TORINO, Italy — UC Irvine junior Selanee Henderson finished fifth to help the United States team win the 11th annual event, completed Saturday at Circolo Golf Torino.

WESTCHESTER — The Anteaters earned their first wins of the season Saturday in the Loyola Marymount tournament.

UCI (2-6), followed a 30-25, 25-30, 30-16, 34-32 win over Nevada with a 28-30, 20-30, 30-20, 30-24, 15-6 win over SMU.

Freshman setter Taryn Robertson had 47 assists against SMU, a match in which sophomore Lauren Kellerman had 18 kills for UCI.

Junior Kristin Kelley (16 kills) and freshman McCall Miller (14) also sparkled against SMU.

Against Nevada, Miller and Kellerman led the way with 16 and 15 kills, respectively.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. Glendale

GLENDALE — The Pirates improved to 2-0 with a 30-21, 30-7, 30-16 nonconference win on Saturday behind Kiwi Winkler’s 14 kills and 19 digs.

Chelsea Spadaro had 24 assists and Jill Sorem had four service aces for OCC.

MAYFIELD, Ky. — Junior Anthony Burrola and Kantey Locah-Adamagan both scored to lead the Lions to an upset of the No. 3-ranked team in the NAIA in the Mid-Continent Tournament on Saturday.

Chris Leiva had a pair of assists for VU, which lost, 1-0, to Cumberlands (Ky.) on Friday.

LOS ANGELES — Junior Colin Mello had three goals for the Anteaters, but USC had eight players score in the nonconference game Saturday.

UCI, ranked No. 12, fell to 2-3, while USC, ranked No. 2, is 1-0.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — UC Irvine senior Anthony Hamilton had a goal and an assist to lead the Anteaters in their first game of the Long Island Soccer Classic on Friday night.

Sophomore Matt Murphy, senior Craig Ettinger and freshman Joel Baker also added goals for UCI (3-1).

Senior goalie Kenny Schoeni had one save to earn his second shutout of the season.

Long Island fell to 1-3.

UCI completes the event today against Fordham.

San Diego State 3, UC Irvine 1

IRVINE — Freshman Kate Berrini put the Anteaters ahead with a goal in the 14th minute, but the Aztecs rallied for the win in the Puma Classic on Friday at Anteater Stadium.

Junior Makenzie Beahm and senior Lauryn Birkinshaw each earned an assist on Berrini’s goal.

UCI fell to 0-5, while San Diego State improved to 3-2.
