NEWPORT BEACH — The Lightning prevailed in the battle of reigning CIF Southern Section champions Friday at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.
The Lightning won CIF Division V last year, while the Breakers were Division I champions.
Sarah Geocaris won two singles sets for the Lightning (2-0).

GARDEN GROVE — Freshman Kendra Fisher swept at No. 3 singles and the No. 1 doubles tandem of Abby Koff and Jennifer Johnston also swept for the Eagles (2-0).

Costa Mesa 16, Orange 12
COSTA MESA — The Mustangs, playing without their senior standout goalie, got seven goals from senior John Roche to top the Panthers in the nonleague season opener under first-year coach Robert Grayeli.
Sophomore Dane Shambrook filled in with three saves as Scott Nesling was attending to a family matter in Arizona.
Junior Sam Edman added four goals for the winners.
