Vikings storm way to summer tourney title

The Marina High boys’ basketball team won five games last weekend to capture the championship of the Battle at the Beach tournament at Arroyo Grande High School.

The Vikings won the 16-team tournament behind the strong guard play of Garrett James and Dion Douglas, shooting of Troy Lewis, Brendan Holmes and Mike Kinoshita, and the defense of Jimmy Irvin, Josh Jordan, Andrew Moore, Chad Lewis, David Vo, Trevor West, Steven Murray, Ryan Lehane, Brandon Adnams and Reggie Rorick.

In the championship game, Marina routed Silverado, 75-42, to cap a 5-0 tournament run. Lewis, who will be a senior in the fall, scored a game-high 30 points, 21 of them coming from three-point range.

Other key performances in the final came from Holmes, a freshman, who scored 12 of his 14 points from three-point range and had four rebounds, and Douglas, a junior, who finished with six points, eight assists and three rebounds.

In pool play Saturday, the Vikings survived their closest game by edging host Arroyo Grande, 51-50. Lewis hit for 16 points — including three three-point shots — and went five-for-five from the free throw line, while Holmes hit a team-high 14 points and Douglas had seven points and four assists.

Marina also whipped Paso Robles, 81-51, in pool play. Lewis canned five three-point shots and finished with 21 points; Kinoshita, a senior, nailed six three-point shots to net 18 points with three assists, and James, a sophomore, canned eight points to go along with five rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Lewis also led the scoring — hitting six three-point shots en route to 26 points — in a 73-62 win over Buchanan of Fresno. Holmes scored 13 points; James had eight points, five assists and five steals; Irwin, a junior, recorded six steals and two assists and Moore, also a junior, grabbed seven rebounds (four offensive) to go along with three steals.

Marina also was a 76-58 winner over Sanger of Fresno in pool play action. Lewis again drilled six three-point baskets, this time to finish with 23 points in addition to getting seven rebounds. James was next with 17 points, six assists and five steals. Kinoshita hit four three-point shots to finish with 14 points and added three assists, and Moore had six points in addition to four rebounds.
