Five Tars all-league

Newport Harbor High seniors Brett Auer, Sean Grubbs and Ted Slater top five Sailors recognized on the coaches’ All-Sea View League boys’ volleyball selections.
Auer, an outside hitter, Grubbs, a libero, and Slater, a setter, were first-team honorees after leading the Sailors to a 23-10 campaign and a second-place finish in league.
Sophomore opposite Kyle Caldwell and junior middle blocker Weston Dunlap were second-team picks.
Auer, who is going to Pepperdine on a water polo scholarship, was the team’s primary hitting threat from the outside. He had a team-high 17 kills when the Sailors clinched second place with a four-game victory over league rival Foothill.
The University of the Pacific-bound Slater triggered the team’s offense, and Grubbs was the team’s top defensive player.
Caldwell established himself as a key contributor and Dunlap had some great moments as a middle blocker, including being named Most Valuable Player at the Orange County Championships, won by the Sailors.
