Local softball teams win tournaments
The Huntington Beach Girls’ Softball 14-and-under All-Star team got its season off to a great start by winning its division at the West Garden Grove Memorial Day Tournament.
Huntington Beach won all five of its tournament games, capped by a 4-3 victory over Redondo Beach in the championship game.
En route to the title, the locals beat both Redondo Beach and host West Garden Grove twice and Long Beach once.
Jacqueline Kent and Amanda Horowitz pitched Huntington to the five victories. Kent won three games and allowed eight runs. She pitched a complete game victory in the title game, striking out seven. In winning two games, Horowitz allowed just one run and threw a pair of one-hitters.
On the offensive end in the tournament for Huntington, Randi Heidenreich hit two home runs, Jessica Garcia homered, Amanda Nicholaou went six for nine and scored seven runs, Chelsea Breitwieser, Lana Rutkin and Kylee Lappin all batted over .400 and Breitwieser and Nicholaou each stole four bases.
Also playing for the Huntington All-Stars are Charlene Courtney, Allison Dufault, Taylor Gould and Meghan White.
In 10-and-Under Division action:
The Dirty Dozen Silver All-Star team won their division’s championship at the West Garden Grove Memorial Day Silver Tournament for the first time in league history.
The Dirty Dozen went 3-0 in pool play, beating South Huntington Beach (14-1), West Grove (4-3) and Santa Monica (14-0). In championship bracket play, the Dirty Dozen defeated Redondo Beach (7-1), and in the championship game they edged host West Garden Grove, 6-5.
The 10-and-Under Silver team is composed of Emily Aranda, Lacey Alaniz, Cheyenne Rankin, Amanda Mattes, Brianna Zwonitzer, Nicole Minnicucci, Tobi Salzman, Mary McGregor, Ally Forsberg, Breanna Payson, Dana Rutkin and Samantha Vandiver.
In South Huntington Beach Softball action:
The Surf City Breakers, a 10-and-Under “A” All-Star team, opened up their tournament season by winning back-to-back championships at the Oceanside Riptide Tournament and the Mirada Madness Tournament in La Mirada.
Oceanside Riptide Tournament
The Breakers posted pool-play wins over Canyon Hills Gold (5-0), Carlsbad (14-0) and Vista Blue 7-0, to earn the No. 1 seed in single-elimination bracket play.
In bracket play, the Breakers bombed Carlsbad (20-0) and Canyon Hills Gold (12-1) to advance to the championship game against Oceanside. In the final, a scoreless game heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Taylor Dennison took the first pitch offered for a leadoff double, and on the ensuing pitch Sammy Cordova doubled to deep centerfield to bring home Dennison for the only run in a 1-0 victory.
During the tournament, the Breakers outscored their opponents, 59-1.
Mirada Madness Tournament
The Breakers posted victories over Downey (4-0), Fullerton Hills Blue (12-0), Torrance (4-0) and La Mirada Silver (12-0) to earn a No. 1 seed from their pool.
On Monday, the Breakers racked up 16 hits in an 8-2 win over North Torrance. In the title game, they scored single runs in the first and seventh innings and made them stand in a 2-0 victory over Downey. Cordova pitched the shutout to complete a tournament run that saw the Breakers record a 42-2 scoring advantage over the opposition.
Cordova and Dennison each pitched five shutout victories in the tournament.
Making key contributions both offensively and defensively for the Breakers were Sarah Baca, Breeauna Beason, Emily Brucelas, Melanie Coyne, Emma Fitzsimmons, Alison Jahansouz, Chanel Luis, Jillian Martinez, Madison Pautsch and Logan Vournas.
The Breakers are coached by Art Cordova, Rich Dennison and Greg Vournas.
