Harman pushes surf museum bill

The state’s legislative surfing squabbles continue.
Assemblyman Tom Harman’s resolution to recognize Huntington Beach’s International Surf Museum as the state’s official surf museum was unanimously passed by the Assembly Committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media.
Harman’s move is intended to counteract legislation introduced by state Sen. Bill Morrow of Oceanside that calls for that town’s California Surf Museum to hold official state status. The Huntington Beach City Council recently passed a measure endorsing Harman’s resolution.
The surf museum in downtown Huntington Beach showcases some of surfing history’s most noteworthy memorabilia, including surfing pioneer Duke Kahanamoku’s surfboards, a Dick Dale guitar and historic photos and posters.
Huntington Beach is also home to the U.S. Open of Surfing Championship and is the “most heavily surfed beach on the West Coast,” according to the Surfers’ Almanac.
