Sailors capture Pacific Coast title

LONG BEACH ? The Newport Harbor High sailing team won the Pacific Coast Championships contested Saturday and Sunday.
The Sailors totaled 105 points, well better than runner-up Pt. Loma of San Diego, the three-time defending national champion, which posted 141.
Corona del Mar finished third (165) and Sage Hill was eighth in the 23-school event.
There were 12 races in both A and B divisions, each lasting about 15 minutes.
The Newport Harbor A division skipper was Michael Menninger. His alternating crew (a skipper and one crew member competed in each race) consisted of Brooke Thomson and Christy Tatchell.
The Newport Harbor B division consisted of skipper Charlie Buckingham and crew Blair Belling and Marla Menninger.
The CdM A division was: Skipper Peter Stemler and crew Emmy Dahl.
The CdM B division was: Skippers Christine Burke, Andrew Mason and Reid Vitarelli, as well as crew Peter Tucci and Alez Dunlap.
Balboa Island resident Blake Warner was the B division skipper for Calvary Chapel, which finished fifth as a team.
The top five teams all qualified for the high school nationals, scheduled May 13-14 in Detroit.
