Local duo set to star

Costa Mesa’s Scott Knox and Sage Hill’s Haywood Wright have been selected to play in the Kiwanis/PlyoCity Orange County All-Star Basketball Games later this month.

The games will be held April 29 at Ocean View High in Huntington Beach. In addition, both will participate in a pregame banquet Sunday at the Hyatt Regency in Garden Grove.

Knox was a Daily Pilot Dream Team selection after helping the Mustangs win a share of the Golden West League title, only the second in school history. The guard was Costa Mesa’s leading scorer at 15.4 points per game and was tops in the league with 76 three-pointers.

Knox, a first-team All-Golden West League pick, also averaged 5.4 rebounds and added 56 steals and 42 assists for the Mustangs.

He’ll join a South boys’ roster that includes All-CIF Southern Section selections Orlando Isais (Century), Andrew Meshot (El Toro), Mark Baldwin (Tesoro), Diego Delgado (Ocean View), Brad Sweezy (Ocean View) and Bussey Ellis (JSerra).

The North team includes Division I-AA Player of the Year Landry Fields of Los Alamitos.

Wright was the Daily Pilot Player of the Year in girls’ basketball after leading Sage Hill to the CIF Southern Section Division IV-A semifinals. The center averaged 13 points, 11.9 rebounds, 4.6 steals and 4.8 blocks in the process.

Wright, who will attend Yale next year, was an All-CIF Southern Section Division IV-A selection and was tabbed as the Academy League’s most valuable player.

Joining Wright on the South girls’ roster will be fellow All-CIF selections Erin Barney (Marina), Lauren Sahli (Villa Park), Courtney Ford (Villa Park), Jacqueline Erickson (Woodbridge), Bridgette Reyes (Woodbridge) and Brittany Taylor (Santa Margarita).

The North team will include Division II-AA Co-Players of the Year Rheya Neabors and Sara Yee of Troy.

Along with the two games for high school seniors, the event will include all-star games for eighth-graders ? two for boys and one for girls.

The first eighth-grade boys’ game starts at 1:30 p.m., followed by the eighth-grade girls’ game at 3 p.m. and the second boys’ game at 4:30 p.m.
