SPEED THRILLS

UC Irvine sprinter Dayne Comrie was selected as the Big West Conference’s men’s Track Athletic of the Week for the week ending April 9.

The junior narrowly won the 200 meters at the Big West Challenge Cup last Friday, finishing in a time of 21.637 seconds. He also took third in the 400 with a mark of 48.38.

DOUBLING UP

Vanguard University swept the Golden State Athletic Conference’s baseball Player of the Week awards for the week ending April 9.

Outfielder Matt Voorhies was named the Player of the Week after hitting .500 for the Lions in four games. The junior had a triple and a home run, driving in two runs and scoring two. He went 4 for 5 in a doubleheader sweep of The Master’s.

Teammate Clay Brown was chosen as the Pitcher of the Week after tossing a seven-hit shutout against The Master’s. The senior struck out six and walked none for his fifth complete game.

NEED FOR SPEED

Newport Beach’s James Sofronas finished fifth at the Sports Car Club of America’s Pro Racing Speed World Challenge GT race on Sunday in Long Beach.

Sofronas, driving a Porsche 911 GT3, opened the race in the seventh position and was able to move up slightly. Ron Fellows edged Tommy Archer to win the race, part of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach weekend.

Sofronas remains in fifth place in the series standings, one point behind Lou Gigliotti for fourth.

The next race in the series in May 19-21 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

BREAKING NEW GROUND

A ceremony marking the beginning of construction on a new clubhouse at UC Irvine’s Anteater Ballpark is scheduled for Tuesday at 5 p.m., prior to the Anteaters’ home game against USC.

The two-story, 6,500-square foot venue will house the coaches’ offices, team locker and equipment rooms and training facilities. It is scheduled to be finished in the fall.

The new clubhouse is being funded by private donations and is the first modification to Anteater Ballpark since its opening in 2002.
