FLYING HIGH
Estancia High freshman Ryan Knapp tied for fourth in Flight B (ages 13-15) at the L.A. City Junior Golf Championships, which concluded Monday.
Knapp fired an even-par 214 over the three-day tournament, playing in the final foursome on Sunday at Encino Golf Course. The freshman was tied for second after each of the first two rounds, shooting one-under-par 69 at Balboa Golf Course in Encino and following it up with a two-under 70 at Encino. He was one of only two players in the field under par for the first two rounds, making six birdies in the second round.
Chase Patten of Simi Valley won the Flight B title, firing a 208.
In Flight D (11-and-under), Ryan’s younger brother Jacob Knapp tied for 20th with a two-day, 18-hole score of 81 at Roosevelt Golf Course. Rico Hoey won the flight with a 72.
SCGA MID-AMATEUR
Newport Beach’s Don DuBois tied for 26th at the Southern California Golf Assn. Mid-Amateur Championships, which concluded Tuesday at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta.
DuBois had a three-round total of 17-over-par 233 to finish 17 shots behind eventual champion Robert Funk of Canyon Lake. DuBois was tied for 14th after two rounds, but faded in the third round on the 7,060-yard Jack Nicklaus-designed course.
Two other local golfers qualified for the tournament, but missed the two-round cut after the first day. Warren Caves of Newport Beach shot 16-over-par and missed the cut by one stroke. Michael Wanamaker of Costa Mesa was two shots behind Caves.
HIGH FIVE FOR HAGESTAD
Sage Hill School freshman Stewart Hagestad tied for fifth at the Southern California Boys’ Junior Championship at Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita.
Hagestad shot a four-over-par 76 to finish four shots behind Edison High’s Tom Moore.
The tournament was sanctioned by Junior Amateur Golf Scholars, a nonprofit organization that puts on tournaments in Southern California for golfers ages 12-18.
The next JAGS tournament is the Inland Empire Junior Challege at the PGA of Southern California Golf Course in Calimesa.
