BOYS’ SIXTH-GRADE

ALL-STARS

The Newport-Mesa all-stars were crowned national champions at the NJB national tournament. In the championship, Newport-Mesa defeated the Fallbrook Warriors, 59-44.

The national tournament included 154 teams from California, Nevada, Texas and Missouri. Newport-Mesa played against teams from St. Joseph, Mo., Vallejo, Fremont, Cypress and Santa Ana leading up to the final.

In the championship game, the leading scorers were Andrew McCormack (15 points), Josef Ctvrtlik (14), Cort Hastings (nine), Sam Noe (six) and Carter Waite (five). Robert Sullivan, who also scored five points, directed the offense with great passing and ball control. Dylan Pievac (four points) was key at the free-throw line at the end of the game. Jake Comer (two points) and Matt Livingston played tough defense.

The opening ceremonies were attended by more than 1,000 people, who were treated to an exhibition shootaround in which selected teams competed against each to complete a free throw, lay-up and three-point shot.

Newport-Mesa had the fastest time among sixth-graders, as Sullivan (layup), Ctrvrtlik (free throw), Livingston (three-pointer) and McCormack (rebounding) played flawlessly.

The team was coached by Mark Waite, Scott Pievac and Bob Sullivan.

Pres Companies 17, Back Bay Funding 5: Isaiah Suarez hit four doubles and drove in four runs to lead Pres Companies. Andrew Chase had four hits ? including two doubles, Ryan McCully had two hits and two runs scored, and Cole Sorensen and Noah Robson each had a hit and scored runs.

Pres Companies received solid pitching from Brad Tapfer, Keaton Cablay and Quinci Holgate. Grayson Miller, Bryan Shollin and Ryan Goodwin also contributed.

Pres Companies 9, Kelley Framing 7: Quinci Holgate struck out the last two batters with the tying run at second base to preserve the win. Brad Tapfer and Keaton Cablay also had strong pitching performances.

Isaiah Suarez finished with two hits and five RBI, and Andrew Chase and Ryan McCully added hits. Bryan Shollin and Ryan Goodwin added good defensive plays.

Connor Seabold hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning for Kelley Framing.

SOCCER ENSIGN

INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

The Ensign eighth-grade boys’ soccer team won the Coastal League championship last week, defeating Sowers Middle School of Huntington Beach, 3-1.

After losing only one game in regulation play during league, Ensign went on to knock off top-seeded Costa Mesa Middle School, 3-2, in the semifinals.

In the final, Ensign took a 3-0 lead into halftime. Jay Ordaz notched the first goal off a corner kick from Erickson Klein. The winning goal came when Ordaz whipped a cross into the box that found Mychael Clark’s boot. To secure the win, Clark belted home a deflection off of Bobby Okvist.

The defensive play of Kyle Evans in goal and Gavin Arblaster, Rodrigo Ruvalcaba, Raymundo Sollano and Simon Hedrick was stellar. Midfielders Austin Webster, Shawn Shahidi, David Melo and Shane Rocco were the workhorses of the team. Jake Manning, Scott Pantoskey and Ryan Albert also played a role in the historic win.

The team was coached by Bob Lear, Mark Arblaster and Carson Hedrick.

BOYS’ UNDER-14

Costa Mesa 2, Tustin 1: Costa Mesa handed Tustin its first loss. Coach Neal Frino’s team was able to keep pace with Tustin, even though he had no substitutes available.

In the first half, forward Tony Rodriguez played well, narrowly missing a goal. He later assisted on a spectacular goal by Gilberto Garcia.

Christian Rodriguez, Edgar Rodriguez, Richard Bello and Joel Allen also made great passes.

Garcia assisted Christian Rodriguez on the second goal.

Christian Rodriguez had to leave the field in the third quarter after getting injured, leaving the Eagles with only 10 players on the field. Still injured, he returned late in the quarter.

The defense held strong with Jovany Castillo, Sean O’Malley and Andrew Guerrero protecting the goal, and forcing the ball back up the field. Edgar Vega made outstanding saves to stop two shots.

GIRLS’ UNDER-10

Purple People Eaters vs. Costa Mesa: The Purple People Eaters played a tough game with Lauren Castleton scoring their only goal. Sterling Brown and Ella McFadin assisted on the goal.

Ally Hadfield played well in goal, with solid defensive support from Allison Bennett and Jaclyn Martin. Marissa Fink played great defense and came close to scoring.

GIRLS’ UNDER-8

White Lightning vs. Blue Soccer Stars: Abigail Klein, Caitlin Harvey and Lauren Grable scored for the White Lightning. Madeleine Francis and Lauren Kobayashi played strong defense and moved the ball around on offense. Alyssa Anderson and Makena Martin played a great all-around game and made some strong saves in goal. It was a very fast-paced game for Coach Marty Klein’s team.

GIRLS’ UNDER-10

E-Lemon-ators vs. Dominators: Forwards Ashley Harris and Cleo Harrington shared MVP honors for the E-Lemon-ators, each scoring twice. The “Sour Power” award went to Hailey Oberst and Bekah Foster for their outstanding play and tough defense.

Late in the second quarter, Cortlynn Clement passed to an open Kailen Locke, who scored, with an additional assist going to Abby Bullock. In the fourth quarter, team captain Samantha Rossi fed the ball to winger Izzy Islava, who drove it into the net.

GIRLS’ UNDER-8

Green Dragons vs. Purple Cheetahs: The Green Dragons’ Julia Ackerman had a hat trick. Alexia Hipsher and Paula Pedrani each added goals. Kathryn Arblaster, Katrina Heil, and Caylee Talbot played ferocious defense. Yasmine Gomez punched several balls out of the pack, while Destry Comp and Isabel Jermias worked the ball through the midfield.

BOYS’ UNDER-8

Yellow Rattlesnakes vs. Tigers: The Rattlesnakes’ Luke Sanchez and Joseph Ferraro played well. Snakes forward Ivis Ramos finished with three goals.

BOYS’ UNDER-5

Green Monkeys vs. Yellow Hornets: The Green Monkeys swung into action early with goals from Tanner Casey and great defense from Dayton Smith. Jared Honda and Luke Nataupsky dribbled well and won several balls in the midfield. Matthew Mowery scored the final goal.

White Tigers vs. Blue Sharks: Johnny Zambrano helped the team out tremendously on defense. Mark Sanchez had two goals to go with the stellar play of Brandon Figueroa.
