Authorities ID car crash victim

Police have released the name of a man killed Sunday night in a fatal one-car accident on Coast Highway in Newport Beach.

Travis Hunt, a 34-year-old Huntington Beach resident, died when the 2002 Honda convertible he was driving westbound on Coast Highway hit the median just west of Balboa Boulevard and Superior Avenue. His car slid down the median, knocked down five palm trees and landed upside down in the eastbound lanes, police said. A passenger in the car, Brent Higa, 35, also of Huntington Beach, was not injured in the accident.

Newport Beach Police Sgt. Bill Hartford said Hunt sustained fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics with the Newport Beach Fire Department. Police are still investigating the accident, Hartford said, but suspect Hunt may have been speeding.

“We’re currently reviewing the physical evidence and witness statements,” Hartford said.

Hartford said the car accident shut down Coast Highway for several hours Sunday night.
