Award-winning pianist at Forum

Laguna Beach Live! will present a performance by Paul Anthony Romero, the winner of the 2004 Van Cliburn Foundation International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs.

Romero will perform a variety of works from Gershwin, Rachmaninoff, Tcherepnin and Ponce at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at the Forum Theater on the Festival of Arts grounds, 650 Laguna Canyon Road.Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for full-time students, and can be purchased at www.lagunabeach live.org or by phone for information at (949) 715-9713.

First Sundays’ chamber music date

Laguna Beach Live! and the Laguna College of Art & Design will present Eric Kinsley, harpsichordist and special guest, counter-tenor Don Krim, in a free afternoon of art and music at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 5, at the college, 2222 Laguna Canyon Rd.

The concert will feature the work of Haydn, Handel, Bach, and Spanish art song. The College Art Gallery opens at 2 p.m. with a new graphic-design exhibition.

Kinsley is a performing artist and educator living in the Los Angeles area after having resided in New York. He holds a Doctorate in Music from the Manhattan School of Music.

Kinsley currently teaches at Southwestern Academy as ensembles director and also teaches music history and counterpoint at California Lutheran University.

Krim is known for his distinctive style, particularly in the performance of early music.

Gates on point for ballet class

Prima ballerina Jodie Gates will teach a ballet master class at noon on Sunday, March 5 at Laguna Beach Ballet Studio, located in the No Square Theater Studios at 1863 S. Coast Highway. Cost is $15.

Gates is former principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, Ballet Frankfurt and other major troupes. She is employed as rehearsal director for Complexions Dance Company, and is artistic director of the Laguna Dance Festival.

Public Art Tour Day set for April

The Laguna Beach Arts Commission and Cultural Arts Department has scheduled the first Public Art Tour Day, planned for 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 23.

Docent-led trolley tours will leave the Festival of Arts grounds at 650 Laguna Canyon Road every 30 minutes starting at 2 p.m. The tours will give insight into the city’s public art collection.

In conjunction with the tours will be an exhibition and artist reception on the Festival of Arts grounds. Artists will be on hand to talk about their works and their creative process. The artist reception will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with live music and refreshments.

The annual Public Art Tour Day is free and funding for this program has been provided by the lodging establishments and the City of Laguna Beach.

Woman’s Club seeks artists

The Woman’s Club of Laguna Beach is now accepting applications from Laguna Beach women artists to exhibit in its fifth annual art show, sale and auction.

The dates for the art show are April 23 and 30. Exhibit space is free but limited, so artists should apply early.

Exhibiting artists will be asked to donate one piece for the art auction, the proceeds of which will benefit activities of the Woman’s Club.

All types of arts and crafts are eligible: jewelry, ceramics, paintings, collages, basketry, drawings, photographs, object de’artes, sculpture, batik fibers, quilts, weaving and tapestry.

Sawdust Studio tickets available

Tickets are now available for the 15th annual Sawdust Art Festival Art Studio Tour, to take place Saturday, April 8.

Fifty Laguna Beach artists will open their private studios and homes, offering a glimpse into how their art is made. Tours start at 9:30 a.m. and end at 5 p.m.

Tickets are $55 and include a continental breakfast, transportation to the studios with guide, and an afternoon reception from 5 to 7 p.m. with music, refreshments and a gallery of art.
