A 52-year-old Corona del Mar man who was stopped on the side of the road to help his son with car problems was severely injured by an alleged drunk driver early Friday.
At 2:20 a.m. Friday, Thomas Kroopf had parked his Mercedes near the curb on Newport Coast Drive to help his son, Bradley Kroopf, 21, who was having mechanical problems with his BMW.
Thomas Kroopf was standing near the curb when a Hummer H2 hit the rear end of his parked Mercedes, causing the car to slam into Kroopf. He was knocked over a chain link fence and down an embankment.
Thomas Kroopf suffered major injuries and was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Trauma Center in Mission Viejo. Kroopf was listed in critical condition late Friday.
The driver of the Hummer, Dean Richard Morrison, 36, of Newport Beach, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. He was booked after being treated for minor injuries at Mission Hospital.
