Lions eke one out

COSTA MESA -- Horace Wormely made three free throws with one second remaining as Vanguard University won a wild Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball game, 82-81, over Concordia on Tuesday night.

The Lions led, 79-77, when Wormely was fouled with 25 seconds remaining. The guard missed both of his free throws and Concordia’s Nate Klitzing sank a three-pointer at the other end to give the Eagles the lead.

Concordia’s Joe Roberson made one free throw with eight seconds remaining, but missed the second. Vanguard got the rebound and Wormely took a three-pointer with one second remaining, but was fouled by Levi Luster.

Vanguard trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half before rallying.

Wormely scored a game-high 28 points for the Lions -- who shot 51.7% from the field -- and had five assists. Greg Gusiff added 15 points, including four three-pointers, and Levi Seekins chipped in with 11 points.

Roberson led Concordia -- which shot 56.4% from the field in the game -- with 17 points.
