Bomb scare is a dud

No explosives in canister turned up by metal detector on beach, O.C. Sheriff’s bomb squad finds. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad determined a canister thought to contain military ordnance was actually empty, officials said.
The canister was found in the sand near Newport Beach lifeguard headquarters Monday afternoon by a resident with a metal detector, Newport Beach Police Sgt. Dave Szkaradek said.
Writing on the canister indicated it contained some sort of explosive, but when the bomb squad arrived around 3:30 p.m., it found nothing inside the canister.
It’s not clear where the canister came from.
