Eagles sink the Argos with press

Estancia girls’ basketball team forces 16 turnovers and goes on 20-0 first-half run in a nonleague rout of Garden Grove Tuesday.COSTA MESA -- If the Estancia High girls’ basketball team was feeling any pressure about its losing streak, the players transferred it all into their defense on Tuesday night.
The Eagles stopped a four-game losing streak, blowing out Garden Grove, 40-21, in nonleague action.
Estancia used a 20-0 run to take control of the game, and destroyed any hopes the Argonauts had of winning.
Alondra Barrera’s three-pointer with one minute left in the first quarter sent the Eagles soaring on the scoreboard.
In the second quarter, Estancia pitched a shutout, holding the Argos scoreless.
Estancia (3-4) rang up 15 points in the quarter, largely with the help of Yasmin Arroyo. The junior accounted for 10 of the Eagles’ points -- scoring eight points and dishing to Be Diep for a jumper.
“Tonight, we played a lot faster,” Arroyo said. “We pressured the ball throughout the game to get them out of rhythm.”
Arroyo had 12 points and two assists. Diep added 12 points, five assists and four steals.
Diep said it felt “real good” to halt the losing streak, and said she believes it will give the team momentum for next week’s Costa Mesa Winter Classic.
