Driver dies in car crash

A man was killed early Saturday in a single-car crash in Costa Mesa, authorities said.

The driver was identified as Richard Linkon, 30, of Irvine. According to a statement from the California Highway Patrol, Linkon was speeding in a 2005 BMW 545i on a transition roadway connecting the northbound Corona del Mar Freeway (73) to the Costa Mesa Freeway (55).

Linkon reportedly lost control of his car and swerved off the left side of the roadway.

The driver’s side of the BMW smashed into a tree, and Linkon was killed by the force of the crash, authorities said.
