Letters for a better world

Third-graders at Anneliese’s School put pen to paper, make requests of powerful people. Getting a hands-on experience of what the power of the pen can accomplish, Lucinda Tinsman’s class of 16 third-graders at Anneliese’s School wrote letters to leaders across the country -- in hopes of making a change.
These were requests to better our environment by reducing pollution and crime, fighting drugs and putting an end to war.
With optimism and the belief that it’s never to late to make a difference, students wrote of individual experiences that inspired their ambitions.
Multiple drafts were produced and read aloud to one another before sending them to some very prominent addresses.
The following are excerpts of the letters.
Dear President Bush,
If you stop lumber companies from cutting down our forests you will help preserve nature for me and other kids to have fun in. -- Reilly Parke.

Dear people on Animal Planet that help animals,
I love animals. I would like to know if you would like me to have a lemonade stand to get money and give it to you to get more stuff to make the animals live longer. -- Zoe Heffer-Smith

Dear Mayor Pearson,
I am writing to you because I don’t like watching the sewage go into the ocean from Aliso Creek after it rains. I was hoping since you are the mayor, you could ask the city to spend more money on the sewage treatment plant. -- Akio Andersen.
When asked whether the letters would be get responses, the students had mixed feelings”Mine might not be done because there are so many things to be questioned,” said Liam, who wrote a letter to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger asking to put an end to drugs and smoking.
“Guns are dangerous; they should stop selling guns that are used to kill animals. It’s just like someone shooting you -- how would you like that?” said Samantha, who wrote a letter to the National Rifle Assn. requesting an end to guns.
Parthiv Worah mapped out a four-point plan to help people with disabilities by giving them robots. The letter was directed to his cousin, who happens to be “a good builder.”
In a letter to Oxford University’s zoology department, Henry asked for a cure for the hermit crab sickness because “no one has been able to do it yet.”
“We worked really hard on this,” said Zoe, who feels the Animal Planet television channel will be interested in her offer to help raise money through a lemonade stand.
As days go by and the students wait for responses, they hope the powerful recipients of their letters will at least consider their wishes. 20051111ippt4yknDON LEACH / COASTLINE PILOT(LA)Zoe Hefter-Smith reads her letter in front of her third-grade classmates at Annaliese’s School in Laguna.
