Pirates sweep rival Rustlers
briefly in sports for Sat.The visiting Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team swept Golden West Friday, 30-24, 30-26, 30-19, in Orange Empire Conference play.
Setter Kaitlin Parker led the way with 52 assists for Coast (11-0, 5-0 in conference).
Leading the way in kills was Kiwi Wrinkler with 15 and Sam Connors with 14 for Coast.
On defense Ashlee Moon had 32 digs, while Brittney Ray contributed 22.
The Rustlers fell to 7-4, 3-2 in conference.
Sailors beat Barons
* FIELD HOCKEY: Host Newport Harbor High’s field hockey team defeated Fountain Valley, 6-1, in Sunset League play Friday at the Harbor Community Center.
Rachel Foster and Nicole Newquist both scored a goal for the Sailors (17-4, 5-1 in league), while Laura Schilling and Robin Ibbetson both added two goals.
Ashton Reef put in a solid effort on defense along with goalkeeper Jessica Pizarek, who had four saves.
CdM spikes Calvary
* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team beat Calvary Chapel Friday, 25-16, 25-18, 25-15, in a Pacific Coast League match.
Brooke Terry had 14 assists and Julian Piggot added 10 digs.
The Sea Kings (4-8, 4-3 in league) will play Tuesday at home against Northwood.
DeMille gets shutout
* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team shut out visiting Riverside, 7-0, Friday in Orange Empire Conference play.
Seven different Coast players scored, including Christine Crosson, Rachel Ronquillo, Meghann Ord, Amanda Thoenson, Nichole Huff, Stacey Shoop and Ashley Boyer.
Goalkeeper Kara DeMille made one save to capture her fourth-straight shutout for the Pirates (6-4-4, 6-1-2).
Goalkeeper Jessica Green of Riverside (5-6-3, 2-6-1) had six saves.
Penalty kick lifts Coast
* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College men’s soccer team beat visiting Fullerton, 3-2, with a 77th-minute penalty kick taken by freshman forward Joel Walker in Orange Empire Conference play Friday. This win puts Coast one point out of first place in conference.
Ian Cone and Eric Nutter both had header goals for the Pirates (9-4-3, 4-2-0). Goalkeeper Trent Painter had five saves for the Pirates.
For the Hornets (9-4-2, 4-1-1), Jesus Flores and Diego Figueroa scored the goals, while goalies Jorge Diaz and Carlos Guerra combined to make four saves.
OCC will host Riverside Tuesday starting at 3 p.m.
VU alumni honored
* BASEBALL: Vanguard University will honor the school’s 1985 baseball team that finished fourth at the NAIA World Series with a reunion and alumni scrimmage today.
Twenty-one members of the 1985 Southern California College Vanguards (as the school was known then) are expected to commemorate the 1985 season at the school’s baseball diamond.
The event will include lunch for alumni players and their families and a scrimmage between the 1985 team and the current squad.
Batting practice will be held for the alumni at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served prior to the anticipated 1 p.m. scrimmage.
There is no admission charge.
Sea Kings split
* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team split its two matches in the opening round of the CdM national invitational Friday at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club. The Sea Kings lost, 8-1, to Santa Barbara, but beat El Toro, 6-3.
The doubles team of Lindsay Zotovich and Danielle Kaiden won their sets in both matches.
Corona del Mar will play in the consolation semifinals against Dana Hills at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club today at 1 p.m.

Sage Hill drops pair
* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School’s girls tennis team dropped its two opening round games, losing to Troy, 8-1, and Mater Dei, 5-4, in the CdM national invitational Friday at the Racquet Club of Irvine.
Sage Hill was able to split the doubles matches against Mater Dei, but lost two of three doubles matches to the Monarchs.
The Lightning will play in the consolation bracket against Santa Margarita 11 a.m. at Corona del Mar High.

* SOCCER: The UC Irvine men’s soccer team tied UC Santa Barbara, 2-2, in a home Big West Conference match Friday. Brad Evans scored both goals for the Anteaters. The UCSB outshot UC Irvine 20-9. Defensively, goalkeeper Ryan Mathy made eight saves in the contest.
UCI ( 6-3-3, 3-0-1 in conference) returns to action Wednesday at Cal State Northridge.
Sea Kings downed
* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High’s boys water polo team lost a nonleague match, 10-8, Friday at El Toro. The Sea Kings were led in scoring by Tom Money and Jacob Murphy with three goals apiece.
The Sea Kings (6-10) will play Wednesday at University.
