Commission selects holiday palette designs

The arts commission on Monday selected six winning designs from 31

entries for its 2005 holiday palette competition. The winning artists

are Cheryl Michelon, Suzanne Redfearn, James Nelson, Sherry Ford, Jim

Stanaland and Charleine Guy.

“We have a fabulous group to select from this year,� arts

commission chair Mike Tauber said. “It looks like we have a diverse

selection and a lot of well-known artists too.�

Entries were judged by the commission based on creativity and

appropriateness.

The competition was open to Laguna Beach residents, artists with a

studio in Laguna Beach or showing in a Laguna Beach gallery, Laguna

College of Art & Design students and artists exhibiting in Laguna

festivals.

A $300 honorarium will be awarded for each selected design. The

palettes will be displayed in Laguna Beach over the holiday season.

Disaster preparedness to be discussed at meeting

The Laguna Relief and Resource Coalition Disaster Preparedness

Committee is sponsoring a community meeting with police and fire

officials on how neighborhoods can prepare for a disaster. The

meeting will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Laguna Presbyterian Church,

415 Forest Ave.

Retiring Police Chief Jim Spreine is hoping that every household

can be prepared to deal with a three-day emergency situation.

Incoming Police Chief Mike Sellers will attend the meeting, as will

Police Capt. Danell Adams and Fire Chief Mike Macey.

Particular attention will be given to organizing neighborhoods to

prepare. Neighborhood Watch and Neighborhood Association participants

are strongly encouraged to attend.

Tidewater Docents seek volunteers

The Tidewater Docent Program was created in April 2003 as the

first program offered by the Ocean Laguna Foundation. Over the last

two years, the volunteers have been trying to educate the public and

protect marine resources. To date, more than 90 volunteers have been

trained as docents.

A new docent training class will be held Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the

Ocean Institute in Dana Point.

“We aim to double the number of docents so that the program can

have a higher presence at our two designated locations, below Heisler

Park and at Treasure Island,� said Mia Davidson, docent coordinator.

“But our real goal is to add another cove to our roster over the next

year.�

To qualify as a docent, volunteers must attend one formal training

session of approximately two hours and accompany a veteran docent for

on-the-job training in the tide pools. Anyone interested in receiving

Gala raises $140,000 for Crystal Cove

Hundreds of Crystal Cove Alliance supporters enjoyed an “Evening

with the Artists� to raise funds for restoration of the Crystal Cove

Historic District. The event raised a record $140,000, a 40% increase

over last year. The funds will be used to help realize the community

vision for preservation and public use of the historic district.

The gala took place Sept. 24 on a blufftop location in Crystal

Cove State Park. Planners had to move the venue from the beach when

it became clear that it would be submerged in unusually high surf.

The display and sale of coastal plein-air artwork was a prominent

feature of the fundraiser.

Business Club hosts attorney as speaker

Diana Cimino, a business attorney, will be the guest speaker at

the Laguna Beach Business Club meeting from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Thursday,

Oct. 20, at the Hotel Laguna. Cimino will discuss legal issues

relating to business entities and the necessity of business

insurance.

Affordable housing committee in need of new members

City officials are seeking applicants to serve on the newly

renamed Housing and Human Services Committee, formerly the Housing

and Human Affairs Committee. The five-member committee is charged

with helping the city “to create affordable housing for all segments

of the community.�

There are four openings on the committee. Members serve two-year

terms and must be residents of Laguna Beach. Applications must be

submitted by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25. Applications may be obtained

from the City Clerk’s office at City Hall, 505 Forest Ave.

Program for children of Afghanistan

The Laguna Beach United Methodist Church’s second program in its

fall lecture series, “The Children of Afghanistan,� is set for 7 p.m.

Sunday at the church, 21632 Wesley Drive.

Speaker Mike Whipple, former mayor of Laguna Niguel and current

City Councilman, is a member of the board of directors of

International Orphan Care. A light supper will be served at 6:30
