Barloon to pace Eagles
Halfway through the Estancia High girls cross country team’s season,
junior Sydney Barloon has emerged as the team’s leader.
Barloon leads a flock of Eagles for the 2005 season.
“She will get to the CIF [Southern Section Division III] finals
again,†Estancia Coach Charlie Appell said. “She should also get top
four in league.â€
Barloon, who finished sixth at the Golden West League finals a
little more than a year ago, clocked the top time for first place at
a double-dual league meet involving Orange and Santa Ana Sept. 29.
And while Barloon has already made her presence known on this
year’s squad, her supporting cast has also been felt.
Sophomores Paula Negrete, Magali Onofre and Karina Rios, along
with freshman Sindi Ramirez, have currently been accounting for the
Eagles’ points.
Negrete finished third at the double-dual league meet against
Orange and Santa Ana, while Onofre, Ramirez and Rio followed.
This year’s squad lost two seniors from last year in Lucy Leon and
Okairy Lomeli, formerly the team’s third and fourth runners,
respectively. But the sophomore trio of Negrete, Onofre and Rios have
stepped up to fill in the gaps.
Rios began the season with bronchitis but has recovered since.
“She’s got a good work ethic,†Appell said. “She’s sincere and
really wants to compete. She’ll give me her heart and soul.â€
Estancia defeated Orange, 17-41, and lost to Santa Ana, 26-30, in
the league meet Sept. 29. The squad currently sits at 2-2 in league.
Last season, the Eagles finished fourth in league.
