CdM runners No. 1 in nation
The Corona del Mar High girls cross country team was recently ranked
No. 1 in the nation in the Nike/Footlocker Super 25 high school poll.
The Sea Kings, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division III,
garnered much attention when they finished first at the Clovis
invitational Oct. 8, setting a course record at Fresno’s Woodward
Park, the same site as the state championships.
Senior Annie St. Geme, who finished second overall in Fresno,
headlines the squad, which is also heavily benefiting from sophomore
Shelby Buckley this season. Buckley, who transferred from Rosary, is
the defending CIF State Division III champion.
Eagles drive past Mesa
* GOLF: Estancia High’s girls golf team won a Golden West League
match Thursday, 226-306, over Costa Mesa at Mesa Verde Country Club.
Bridgett Gleason led the Eagles with a 3-over-par 38. Caroline
Clements contributed a 40. Lauren Cushing (47), Josie Flores (50) and
Lauren Donner (51) scored for Estancia (14-2, 7-0 in league), which
takes on Huntington Beach Monday at David Baker golf course.
Newport over Irvine
* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team won
Sea View League match, 27-25, 25-11, 25-22, Thursday at home against
Irvine. Bryana Carey led the Sailors with 15 kills. Cassidy Gayner
contributed seven digs and six kills. The Sailors (10-6, 4-0 in
league) play a league match Tuesday at Laguna Hills.
Sea Kings triumph
* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team won Thursday at
home, 16-2, over Calvary Chapel in a Pacific Coast League match. The
Sea Kings won all nine singles matches. Junior Kelly McKitterick
swept her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Corona del Mar (12-2, 7-0 in league)
will play Santa Barbara in the CdM All American tournament at Balboa
Bay Club Racquet Club today at 11 a.m.
Hawks handle Sailors
* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High girls golf team fell to visiting
Laguna Hills, 238-249, in Sea View League play Thursday on Costa Mesa
Golf & Country Club’s Mesa Linda course.
Sophomore Kendall Horn led the Sailors (0-11, 0-6 in league) with
a 46, while freshman Brittany Phillips (48), junior Iko Kagasoff
(48), sophomore Ali Grace (52) and freshman Tiffany Kim (55) also
tallied scores for Newport.
Irene Atkins earned medalist honors with a 43 for Laguna Hills
(9-6, 4-3).
Newport plays host to Woodbridge at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Santa Ana
Country Club.
Sage Hill falls late
* VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill School’s girls volleyball team lost an
Academy League match at home Wednesday, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 20-25,
15-10, to St. Margaret’s. Cat Dailey led the Lightning with 20 kills
and Vista Murphy added 18 kills in a losing effort.
Sage Hill lost its first match of the season and is now 7-1, 4-1
in league. The Lightning next play Tuesday afternoon at home against
Whitney.
Team USA splits
* WATER POLO: Despite a tough defensive effort, Newport Harbor
High star Clay Jorth and the USA Junior National Water Polo Team fell
to Russia, 10-5, at the Junior World Championships in Mar Del Plata,
Buenos Aires, Argentina Thursday. But the U.S. men redeemed
themselves in the next game against Argentina with a resounding 13-3
win. Seven players scored for Team USA, including local product
Jorth, who netted one goal.
Lions are victorious
* SOCCER: Vanguard University’s men’s soccer team registered its
second consecutive shutout with a 1-0 win over Westmont College
Wednesday night in Costa Mesa.
The Lions move to fifth place in conference with a 2-2-1 Golden
State Athletic Conference record.
David McAulay scored 13 seconds into the second half for his first
goal of the season. The Lions move to 6-5-2 overall.
